6/15/13 Newsletter

Dear Parents of First Grade "Smart Cookies",
The last full week of first grade was action-packed and flew by!  (How can it possibly be June already?!) Since we had so many exciting events and also because I must work on progress reports, you will "luck out" with a shorter summary of our week.  All the great shots bring to mind the old saying, " A picture is worth a thousand words."  I think the pictures will show the accomplishments, pride, and fun of the past week. Enjoy!
Monday: Students were still "lost in their books" and acting like "writing machines"! I'm so proud of the "smart cookies" practicing their reading and writing skills throughout the week!
Fun math work practicing our money skills with real coins, skip counting, and partner work.
The students made their poster/signs for our readers' theater plays and posters for our scenery as we practiced to prepare for our parent presentation.
Tuesday: The students made their Father's Day cards and gifts.  (You may not have received them yet as Father's Day is tomorrow, but I hope they made it  home in one piece.  Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and grandfathers! Treat yourselves well!)
Ms. Sorensen, Ned's mom, came in as Guest Reader. Ms. Sorensen shared two super books with us: Where Is Gah-Ning? and A Sick Day for Amos McGee. The kiddos LOVED being active participants joining in on a repeated line and with hand motions! Thanks for the great reads, Ms. Sorensen!
Wednesday: Ms. Brenner came in to read to the children and to talk with them about the exciting summer reading program and events at The Bethlehem Public Library. (A bookmark with information should have made it home with your child. You may register your child online or at the library.) This brings back super memories because my son always loved the summer reading programs and events. I hope my "smart cookies" will take advantage of the program.
***The "Smart Cookies" present their favorite month poems, readers' theater plays, and "Me Poems" to a standing-room-only audience!*** I want to thank everyone for taking time out of your busy schedules to come and share in the success stories that are your children! Thanks also to the generous parents who supplied the yummy treats!  I was SO PROUD of our kiddos that I felt like a mother hen, and the children were so pleased and excited to perform for you! CONGRATULATIONS to all my awesome students!
Thursday:  Field Day! (Need I say more? LOL!)  The rainy weather did not stop us! A great time was had by all as we traveled through exciting stations! Thanks to Mrs. Young and all the outstanding parent volunteers for their incredible organization and hard work!
Friday:  The end-of-year projects continued as the students made "Triple Terrific Trophy Awards" for both their fourth-grade buddies and for a classmate. (The children are not supposed to tell which classmate their trophy is for until they surprise them at our end-of-year party on Monday.)
At snack time Scott celebrated his summer birthday with his classmates. Thanks for celebrating with us and for the cool pencils, too! Happy birthday, Scott!
Our classroom, and school, looked like a sea of red, white, and blue as we celebrated Flag Day. There was a whole-school Flag Day Assembly at the end of our day. Each class participated in some way. The first graders sang "You're A Grand Old Flag" including some marching and actions to match the lyrics. I think our kiddos may now be "hooked" on this performing thing!  They did a SUPER job!
Thanks again for all your support at home! I truly appreciate it!
